Toi et Moi
In the 17th century, romantic 'toi et moi' (from French "You and I") rings became popular in Europe. The name refers to the distinctive setting of the stones used. Two stones set close together were meant to symbolize intertwined souls merging into one. The ring that cemented this trend was the sapphire and diamond jewel that Napoleon Bonaparte gave to his sweetheart in 1776. "Toi et moi" is still one of the most popular models of engagement rings.
