PENDANT WITH EMERALD
Description
A delicate pendant with a natural emerald, set in 14K yellow gold.
Emeralds, a variety of beryl, are known for their deep green color, which comes from the presence of chromium and vanadium. Emeralds often contain inclusions—natural "birthmarks" of the stone—known as jardins (French for "gardens"). This name refers to the intricate and often beautiful patterns that inclusions create within the stone. These "gardens" are unique to each emerald, making every stone one of a kind.
Inclusions are an integral part of emeralds' nature, adding to their character and charm.
Emeralds have a hardness of 7.5–8 on the Mohs scale, making them relatively hard but not as hard as diamonds or sapphires. Despite their hardness, emeralds require special care when being set due to their inclusions and natural brittleness.
To improve durability and clarity, many emeralds undergo treatments such as oiling or filling microfractures with special substances. This is a widely accepted practice.
